1977 – a pretty great year for music. Punk was breaking out big time, and the groups that punk railed against also put out memorable albums. Let’s start with Rumours by Fleetwood Mac – an album of songs that everyone seems to know, and was huge, Huge, HUGE. Steve Miller cemented his reputation that year as well with Book of Dreams, which had the big hit “Jet Airliner” (though not written by Miller) on it. I remember driving around and having my local radio station continually play the whole album when it was released.
So once more I’ve put together a bunch of great songs form 1977, and left off a bunch more that probably should have been here. Listen for yourself and tell me what’s missing.
But we have most of the biggies, including Fleetwood Mac, Heart, the Steve Miller Band, Steely Dan, Garland Jeffreys, Joan Armatrading, Muddy Waters, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, Television, Graham Parker, the Jam, Elvis Costello, Dave Edmunds, Cheap Trick, and Little Feat.
