I was always under the assumption that Memorial Day started after World War 1, but it actually started in 1868, after the Civil War (as Decoration Day, which is the name of a blues song). People in Decatur, Illinois, started honoring the war dead by decorating their graves with flowers, and it was replicated all over the United States. What a nice origin for the day, which is used to commemorate all of those who gave their lives for the United States. Let’s take a few moments today to honor them and their ultimate sacrifice so we can have cookouts and enjoy friends and family.
On this Memorial Day, we celebrate with some great songs, from Taj Mahal, Blood, Sweat & Tears, the Impressions, Pavement, Joe Goddard, Robyn Hitchcock, Little Cub, Jerry Reed, Poco, the Byrds, Uncle Tupelo, Steve Miller, the Jeff Beck Group, Led Zeppelin, and Steely Dan.
