Happy Halloween! Don’t know how you celebrate Halloween – there’s no dress up or parties for me. Actually, in my area there are a number of towns that have Trick or Treat a day early – I think that they call it Beggar’s Night. Not sure how the tradition started around here, but it went back to when I was in college (if not before).
One year in college I was in an apartment in Portsmouth, NH talking with my roommate about getting candy for Halloween when we heard a knock at the door. There were kids dressed up for Halloween. We told them that they were a night early, and they said that everyone did Trick or Treat on the 30th. We had something to give them (not sure what), but when the 2nd knock came soon afterward, we decided to walk to town and drink until it was safe to come home. Still – it’s weird to Trick or Treat a day early. In many cases it gives children the opportunity to Trick or Treat on 2 nights – the town next to ours is a regular trick or treat night, and we’ve gotten imports from there on the 30th. It’s not right, but good for them.
The new podcast has a Halloween theme (almost). Can you guess it from these artists: L7, Curtis Mayfield, the Kinks, the Rolling Stones, Beck, Wire, Flash and the Pan, Crazy Horse, Graham Parker, the Clash, the Jesus and Mary Chain, the Heavy, Swans, and Lou Rawls. Listen for the connection.
