Bad Times – Have Fun

The world can be a terrible place. Shootings, hurricanes, the pandemic – bad. So my mantra for today is enjoy yourself and have fun – we’ll get back to the bad things later.

Enjoy yourself with these tunes from these artists in this week’s podcast: Squeeze, Crowded House, the Go-Betweens, Crosby/Nash, Neil Young, Crazy Horse, Faces, the J. Geils Band, the Allman Brothers Band, Jimi Hendrix, Funkadelic, Frankie Rose, Wild Nothing, and the Pains at Being Pure at Heart.

Lazy Summer

One thing that’s seemed normal to me this summer is the laziness that seems to spread over late summer. Is it the numerous hot days that lead to this, or is there some other effect that causes my torpor? I start putting off tasks I should take care of. Wasn’t sure it would be this way in COVID times, but it’s happening again.

I’m not helped by Kate having me take her to places and otherwise taking my time, even though she’s assigned me some of these tasks. That’s COVID-related in part, as she can’t be as social as she usually is in the summer.

So I’ll just take it easy today and try to organize the things I have to do. Since I can’t have a real vacation, maybe I’ll take some time off work and get those things done.

And when I do start doing these tasks, I’ll be listening to music from folks like Courtney Barnett, Black Grape, Lydia Loveless, Nicole Atkins, My Morning Jacket, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey, the New Pornographers, Jenny Lewis, Neko Case, Elvis Costello, Irma Thomas, the Neville Brothers, and Bobby Blue Bland.

Post Office

Weather broke so the weekend’s not too hot. It’s temporary, though – we’ll be back in the high 80’s by the middle of the week. I’ll take the brief respite.

Not sure what we can do – pressure the politicians to do something- but let’s save the Post Office. It really is important. They’re the only organization that delivers mail to everyone. Every single household in the United States, on a daily basis (well, not on Sundays). No other company does that. UPS even uses the post office to deliver some packages.

I’ve seen some people say that as a Capitalist society we should have some private company take over and have them deliver mail. One of the first things this company would do is stop delivering mail on a regular basis to rural areas. Not cool. Postage would also increase, and thee’d be different rates depending on where one sends mail. Bad system.

The USPS receives no money from the government, so they’re already operating independently, as a private company would do. The pre-funding of benefits, that no other company has to do, is why they have a deficit.

We should also buy stamps and send out mail. In this pandemic, let’s return to simpler times where we write and actual letter and say hello to people.

Owen

It’s another Owen weekend – too busy to do much, as he wants to help, but really, what does an 8-month baby know about writing? Probably as much as me.

So, to hold off the baby from taking over the writing, we’ll soothe him with music from The Ramones, Liz Phair, Elvis Costello, Hole, Roxy Music, Syd Straw, the Merry-Go-Round, Samantha Fish, Bonnie Raitt, Norah Jones, the dB’s, George Harrison, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

August

Check another month off the 2020 calendar. July’s done – how will this August be? As hot as July? Right now the forecast is for the weather to be in the 80’s – quite a comedown from the 90s that dominated July. That’ll be a nice change.

I’m rushing it today – babysitting while the parents pack to move into their new digs. So enjoy today with music from Stevie Ray Vaughan, Los Lobos, the Who, Bryan Ferry, My Morning Jacket, John Hiatt, Sam Phillips, David Ruffin, Jon Cale, Willy DeVille, Rusted Root, the Midnight Hour, Lina Gayle, and Long John Baldry.
